Hello,

We just got back from a basic check-up appointment with Dr. Rytting (the oncologist). We weren't expecting any information regarding the radiation issue but he had all the reports back and could determine that Joey was not a "complete responder." Therefore, we know he has to have radiation.

You'll remember he was a complete metabolic responder (the cancer was dead) back in November but the issue for the clinical trial requires he have a greater than 80% reduction in all tumors or they are less than 3 cm in size. "Tumor" is defined to include scar tissue which is something that was not made clear with regards to the trial until today. So.........

Here is where Joey stands: He actually had one tumor in his chest get a bit larger. All the rest shrunk but some are still too big (his were pretty big to start with so Dr. Rytting didn't seem too surprised). While we are very sad to see Joey have to endure more treatment we are thankful for the added "security" against relapse that the radiation provides.

While radiation is good in that it helps against relapses (which, in the case of lymphoma, are significantly harder to treat) there are some fairly significant side affects, especially since his entire chest and neck area will be radiated (unlike breast and lung cancer where it is more pinpointed). He is facing throat and mouth sores, weight loss, nausea, hair loss, loss of thyroid and saliva glands and taste buds, excess cavities, potential heart and lung damage and fatigue (sound familiar? many on of the same affects from the chemo). But these too can be dealt with. Bottom line ---- radiation kills cancer!

The length of the radiation treatment will be determined on his first visit with the radiologist (appointment not yet set.) We are expecting approximately 3 weeks of daily radiation (not including weekends) with 2 to 3 weeks of recuperation time, per Dr. Rytting. We imagine the treatments will start January 28th ish. His starting back at school will be delayed until late February although, as is always his plan, he is hoping to participate in golf tournaments between now and then. (We will see how he handles the radiation)

Please continue the prayers and positive thinking. Thanks for continuing the emotional, spiritual and physical support of our family - it makes a world of difference to us.

Hope, health and love,
Cindy
